H

udson Valley resident and National Geographic filmmaker Jon Bowermaster has visited the remote seventh continent of Antarctica more than two dozen times. His first National Geographic Magazine assignment was set there, in 1989, documenting the longest dog-sledding expedition in history. More recently he produced and directed the first IMAX 3D film.

Since then Jon’s returned almost annually, with film cameras, traveling by foot, small plane, sea kayak and sailboat, to document both the beauty of the ice-covered landscape and also the impacts a changing global climate is having on this most remote corner of the planet. Pairing some of Jon’s beautiful, highest-res video images captured over the past twenty years with the Vaughn Williams 1940s “Sinfonia Antarctica” is a first, having its premiere with the Hudson Valley Philharmonic on November 18, 2017.
